Prime Healthcare Hospitals Awarded an “A” for Patient Safety by Hospital Safety Score

Ontario, Calif., June 6, 2012 – Eleven Prime Healthcare hospitals were honored today with an “A” Hospital Safety ScoreSM by The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits.

The first annual Hospital Safety ScoreSM was calculated under the guidance of The Leapfrog Group’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel. Using publicly available information, the panel graded more than 2,600 U.S. hospitals based on data that tracks preventable errors and medical complications, such as hospital-acquired infections and medication mix-ups. U.S. hospitals were assigned an A, B, C, D, or F for their safety. Only 729 of the hospitals graded received an “A.”

“We are committed to keeping our patients safe and for making safety information available to healthcare consumers,” said Prem Reddy, M.D., FACC, FCCP, Chairman, President and CEO of Prime Healthcare Services. “These high scores highlight the devotion and hard work by the physicians, nurses and staff at these hospitals to the highest standards of quality care in the nation.”

The Prime Healthcare hospitals that received an “A” were: Centinela Hospital Medical Center, Chino Valley Medical Center, Desert Valley Hospital, Encino Hospital (Non-profit), Garden Grove Hospital Medical Center, La Palma Intercommunity Hospital, Paradise Valley Hospital, San Dimas Community Hospital, Shasta Regional Medical Center, Sherman Oaks Hospital (Non-profit) and West Anaheim Medical Center.

“It’s The Leapfrog Group’s goal to give patients the information they need and deserve before even entering a hospital,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “We congratulate the hospitals that earned an ‘A’ and we look forward to the day when all hospitals in the U.S. will earn the highest scores for putting patient safety first.”

To see the hospitals’ scores as they compare nationally and locally, visit www.hospitalsafetyscore.org, the Hospital Safety ScoreSM website, which also provides information on how the public can protect themselves and loved ones during a hospital stay.

Calculated under the guidance of The Leapfrog Group’s nine-member Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 26 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single score representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from infections, injuries, and medical and medication errors. The panel includes: John Birkmeyer (University of Michigan), Ashish Jha (Harvard University), Lucian Leape (Harvard University), Arnold Millstein (Stanford University), Peter Pronovost (Johns Hopkins University), Patrick Romano (University of California, Davis), Sara Singer (Harvard University), Tim Vogus (Vanderbilt University), and Robert Wachter (University of California, San Francisco).

Dr. Prem Reddy Named Among Most Influential Physician Executives in Nation

Ontario, Calif., April 30, 2012 – Prem Reddy, M.D., FACC, FCCP, Chairman, President and CEO of Prime Healthcare Services, has been named to Modern Healthcare’s prestigious list of the “50 Most Influential Physician Executives” for 2012.

Dr. Reddy was picked as the twenty-third most influential physician executive in the nation. This is the second time he has been recognized on the list, which this year included Regina Benjamin, Surgeon General of the United States Public Health Service, and Richard Gilfillan, Director of CMS Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation, as well as physician executives from the Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic.

“I am honored to be selected to this prestigious list,” Dr. Reddy said. “Prime Healthcare, with its mission of saving hospitals, saving jobs and saving lives, will continue to provide comprehensive, quality health care in a compassionate, convenient and cost-effective manner.”

Modern Physician and sister publication Modern Healthcare co-sponsor this annual recognition program. According to Modern Healthcare, the name of the program reflects the skills needed to improve the healthcare delivery system in the post-healthcare reform era. It takes power to make reform happen; now it will take influence to make reform work.

Reader nominations are used to create the final ballot for this competition. Readers then vote for one of 100 physician executives on that ballot. Readers’ votes count for 50 percent of the outcome. The other 50 percent came from the expert opinions of the senior editors at Modern Healthcare and Modern Physician.

Prime Healthcare was recognized in 2012 as one of the Top 15 Health Systems in the nation by Thomson Reuters, based on quality of care, efficiency and patient satisfaction. Desert Valley Hospital Named One of the Nation’s 100 Top Hospitals by Thomson Reuters for the 6th time

Anaheim, Calif., April 16, 2012 – Desert Valley Hospital today was named a “100 Top Hospital” by Thomson Reuters, the world’s leading provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality of healthcare. This is the sixth time Desert Valley Hospital has earned the national recognition.

“This award reflects the commitment to excellence and the dedicated patient care that our hospital provides daily,” said Margaret R. Peterson, PhD, CEO of Desert Valley Hospital. “We are proud to be acknowledged as a leader in health care with this prestigious award.”

With nearly 3,000 U.S. hospitals surveyed, the hospitals demonstrated that high-quality patient outcomes can be achieved while improving efficiency.  According to Thomson Reuters, if all hospitals performed at the same level as the 100 Top Hospitals award winners:

•    More than 186,000 additional lives could be saved.
•    Approximately 56,000 additional patients could be complication-free.
•    More than $4.3 billion could be saved.
•    The average patient stay would decrease by nearly half a day.
•    The typical winning hospital charges $464 less per discharge than the typical non-winner.

“This prestigious recognition speaks volumes to our commitment to quality patient care,” said Prem Reddy, MD, FACC, FCCP, Chairman, President and CEO of Prime Healthcare Services. “I congratulate the physicians, nurses and staff at these hospitals for their deep devotion to the highest standards of quality care in the country.”

Five of the nine California community hospitals that earned the Thomson Reuters “100 Top Hospitals: National Benchmarks for Success, 2012” were Prime Healthcare hospitals: Centinela Hospital Medical Center, among the large community hospitals, Chino Valley Medical Center, Garden Grove Hospital Medical Center, West Anaheim Medical Center [three-time winner], among the medium community hospitals, and Desert Valley Hospital [six-time winner], among the small community hospitals. This is the thirteenth time a Prime Healthcare hospital has been recognized with this honor.

The Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals study evaluates performance in 10 areas: mortality; medical complications; patient safety; average patient stay; expenses; profitability; patient satisfaction; adherence to clinical standards of care; post-discharge mortality; and readmission rates for acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), heart failure, and pneumonia. The study has been conducted annually since 1993. Hospitals do not apply, and winners do not pay to market this honor.

Prime Healthcare Services Selects INFINITT PACS and Cardiology PACS for System-wide Upgrade

April 12, 2012

Phillipsburg, NJ – Prime Healthcare Services (PHS), a progressive and rapidly expanding hospital management company based in Ontario, CA, currently owns and operates sixteen acute-care hospitals. In February 2012, PHS signed a master agreement with INFINITT North America to replace PACS and Cardiology PACS at several of its California hospitals.

Prime Healthcare Services (PHS) has been ranked by Thomson Reuters as one of the 15 Top Health Systems in the nation (January, 2012) based on quality of care, efficiency and patient satisfaction. The mission of PHS is to provide comprehensive, quality healthcare on a model that emphasizes timely and cost-efficient emergency care.

Centinela Hospital Medical Center (CHMC), a 369-bed PHS hospital, implemented the INFINITT PACS five years ago to support the full spectrum of diagnostic services and almost 60,000 ED visits annually. The PACS increased reading efficiency and reduced report turnaround times, metrics directly related to Emergency Department throughput and quality of care.

“The INFINITT PACS helped us to deliver services in a more timely and efficient manner,” said Shawna Tanaka, CHMC’s Radiology Director. “We also like INFINITT’s ED Notes feature; we encourage all our ED physicians to jot down their impressions to give the radiologists a better overall picture of the patient’s condition.”

INFINITT PACS has also been implemented at Encino Hospital Medical Center (151 beds) in Encino, CA and Desert Valley Hospital in Victorville, CA (83 beds). Additional implementations are planned for Chino Valley Medical Center in Chino, CA; Sherman Oaks Hospital in Sherman Oaks, CA; Alvarado Hospital (Cardiology PACS) and newly acquired Harlingen Medical Center in Texas (Radiology and Cardiology PACS).

INFINITT PACS is a category leader in KLAS, having achieved No. 1 rankings in the Best in KLAS Awards: Software and Services for Community PACS for three years in a row (2009, 2010 and 2011).* KLAS is an independent research firm specializing in monitoring and reporting on vendors’ performance in the healthcare market. About INFINITT North America

INFINITT North America, located in Phillipsburg, New Jersey, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of INFINITT Healthcare, a global company with more than 2500 PACS installations worldwide. Infinitt’s web-based image and information management solutions include RIS, PACS, Cardiology PACS, Mammo PACS, Orthopedic PACS, Dental PACS and 3D/Advanced Visualization software, all operating on a single database. Centinela Hospital Physician Grateful for the Care He Received as a Patient at the Hospital

Dr. Armen Hovhannisyan is a busy man. As an internal medicine specialist on staff at Centinela Hospital Medical Center, his office waiting room is always full with patients. He also shuttles between his office and Centinela Hospital to see his hospitalized patients. However, in late August 2011 the 39 year old Dr. Hovhannisyan abruptly went from being a health care provider at Centinela Hospital to becoming a patient at the very same hospital that he treats so many patients. His intimate experience as a patient began as he was getting into his car in the doctor’s parking lot of the hospital. Thinking that he had been only suffering from a cold for the last several days, Dr. Hovhannisyan was, unbeknownst to him, feeling the ill effects of a much more dangerous illness – acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).

ARDS is a life-threatening lung condition that prevents enough oxygen from getting into the blood. It leads to a buildup of fluid in the air sacs which prevents enough oxygen from passing into the bloodstream. The fluid buildup also makes the lungs heavy and stiff, and decreases the lungs’ ability to expand.

Unable to breath, Dr. Hovhannisyan lost consciousness in his parked vehicle and soon went into cardiac arrest. Luckily for him, two of his colleagues, John Anderson, M.D. and Paymon Banafshe, D.O. noticed him slumped over the wheel of his car and managed to reach through an open window to open the driver’s door and pull him out. Immediately realizing the grave nature of his condition, they began CPR in the parking lot and soon had him rushed to the nearby Centinela Hospital ER where he had a breathing tube inserted and his heart re-started through cardiac defibrillation.

Once his condition was stabilized, Dr. Hovhannisyan was transferred to the hospital’s cardiac intensive care unit where he remained unconscious for the next ten days receiving treatment to fight his infection. During this time, the Centinela Hospital staff rallied around his care. He was seen by numerous colleagues to assess his condition. Physician specialists in anesthesiology, cardiology, nephrology, pulmonology, critical care medicine and internal medicine all had a hand in his recovery.

When he finally awoke, Dr. Hovhannisyan says, “I didn’t remember how I became a patient at Centinela Hospital, but I do remember that there must have been at least 20 of my fellow doctors and hospital staff in my room praying for my recovery.” Under a comprehensive treatment plan, Dr. Hovhannisyan’s health quickly improved and he was soon discharged from the hospital. He continues, “I can’t thank the physicians and staff of Centinela Hospital enough for everything they did for me while I was in the hospital. Without their care, I wouldn’t be here right now. There are so many people there that I would like to thank including my colleagues, nurses and hospital staff.”

Now back to full health and back at work, it is hard to believe that just a few short months ago he was hovering near death, but Dr. Hovhannisyan firmly believes someone was watching over him that day. He says, “From the time I was rolled into the ER until my discharge I couldn’t have been placed in better hands. I will always remember the amazing level of care that I received while as a patient of the hospital. I literally owe them my life.”

Inland Valley Daily Bulletin: Local hospitals rated top 5 percent in survival rates

Local hospitals rated top 5 percent in survival rates
Sandra Emerson, Staff Writer
Created:   04/01/2012 06:16:59 PM PDT

UPLAND – Patients seeking emergency care at a local hospital may be interested in knowing their likelihood for survival.

Denver-based company CPM HealthGrades named the top 5 percent of hospitals across the country for survival rates.

San Antonio Community Hospital in Upland made the grade.

“We’re proud of our effort,” said Kevin Parkes, medical director of San Antonio’s emergency department. “We know we’re doing a good job day in and day out. It’s nice to get this kind of recognition.”

The hospital was presented with the HealthGrades 2012 Emergency Medicine Excellence Award.

This is their third year receiving the recognition, Parkes said.

“Patients look at what hospital their going to in terms of medical conditions where they’re going to have the best chance or best outcome,” Parkes said.

“By choosing one of the top five percent of hospitals you can improve your chances of doing well.”

Chino Valley Medical Center in Chino and Desert Valley Hospital in Victorville also made the list.

The findings are based on an analysis of more than 7 million Medicare patient records from 2008-10.

The HealthGrades Emergency Medicine in American Hospitals report focused on 12 of the most common and life threatening medical emergencies including heart attack and heart failure, pneumonia, respiratory failure, stroke, diabetic acidosis, pancreatitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

The hospitals that made HealthGrades’ Emergency Medical Excellence list had on average 41.52 percent lower risk-adjusted mortality.

If all hospitals performed at the level of the Emergency Medicine Excellence hospitals from 2008-10, and additional 170,856 people could have potentially survived their emergency hospitalization, according to HealthGrades.
